The National Institute of Standards and Technology is soliciting public comment on its cryptographic standards and guidelines development process starting Feb. 18.
NIST began a review of its cryptographic standards in November 2013 after the leak of classified documents caused concern from professionals and the public.
“We strive for a consistently open and transparent process that enlists the worldwide cryptography community to help us develop and vet algorithms included in our cryptographic guidance,” said a statement by NIST.
NIST is looking for feedback especially on what principles it should use to drive its standards development efforts.
It is also requesting comment on engaging the cryptographic community for providing inclusivity and transparency to develop standards, as well as other communication channels NIST should consider to communicate with its stakeholders.
The public comment period will end April 18.
“Based on the public comments and independent review, we will update our process as necessary to make sure it meets our goals for openness and transparency, and leads to the most secure, trustworthy guidance practicable,” NIST said.
