Commerce reaches out digitally

A new office within the Commerce Department has opened as a means to communicate with consumers, businesses and other stakeholders.

The Office of Digital Engagement will be housed within the public affairs office and will be responsible for digitally communicating with citizens through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms, according to a statement released by the Commerce Department.

“By using the power of digital media, the Department of Commerce and our bureaus are working together to ensure that American businesses have access to more agency information and resources that can help them grow and hire,” Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said in the statement.

The new office was opened as part of the Commerce Department’s Open for Business agenda, created in late 2013.

The agenda highlights digital economy as one of its main facets.

“In the coming weeks and months, the Commerce Department will unveil a comprehensive and coordinated approach to digital economy issues—all with the goal of nurturing the innovative potential of the digital economy,” the agenda said.

The State Department is one of the other agencies to create an office purely for digital engagement. It offers Twitter feeds in 10 foreign languages and has a presence on Facebook, Flickr, Instagram and other platforms.

In the past, Pritzker has used social media to host digital events to attract the interest of small-business owners, exporters and venture capitalists.

Mike Kruger, director of digital strategy, will direct the new office.
